Position Summary:
Thanks to a federal DOE TIF grant of $17M over the next 5 years to help Mastery significantly upgrade our approach to talent, we are making big capacity building investments in our recruitment team. To that end, we are seeking a leader who can define and execute a best in class vision for recruitment outreach, operations and data. This is a great opportunity for a leader who will deliver on the vision of a cross-functional strategy that is integrated into our talent and instructional strategies and serves leaders, teachers and ultimately our scholars well. This position is part of Mastery’s recruitment team.
The Mastery recruitment team works to ensure that the highest quality mission-aligned teachers join Mastery. The Director of Recruitment Outreach, Data and Operations will support the recruitment team in our efforts to have a world class back office, regularly keep in touch with our broad base of eligible candidates and grow a robust pipeline. This position provides the opportunity to tangibly impact the greatest determining factor of a child’s educational success: teacher quality. This position is ideal for an individual who possesses project management and operations skills, desires to create larger systems and processes for schools and nonprofits, and who excels at influencing and motivating others towards action.
Responsibilities of the director will include but are not limited to:
Building for Scale and Sustainability
- Evaluate recruitment processes; recommend knowledge management tools; outsource service changes in partnership with other team leaders
- Manage all systems, data and processes related to operations of an ~8-person team that hires over 200 new staff each year
- Collaborate with leaders within and outside the team and with assistant principals of operations in the schools to ensure that schools are ready to onboard their new staff
Manage Team Technical Systems and Data Tracking
- Heavily contribute to the user requirements development for our new talent management system – garnering feedback from the team, managing flawless implementation and data migration, training the team and designing reports needed to move the team forward in its goals
- Ensure the recruitment team is using data to drive operations and strategy decisions by regularly reporting on key goals
- Managing part-time recruitment coordinator on back office operations and data
Team Leadership
- Support team management, scope and sequence of team learning, team communication
- Administer team budget, approving expenditures and determining fund allocation
- Oversee monthly team meetings and scope and sequence of team learning
- Lead team’s annual strategic planning, developing goals and tactics that align with organization wide priorities focused on school leadership, diversity and scaling
Outreach Planning and Coordination
- Design a year-long outreach plan that systematically builds a short- and long-term teacher and talent pipeline
- Design and implement regular opportunities for high-quality candidates to learn more about Mastery (e.g., host virtual professional development sessions, attend career fairs, lead school visits)
- Oversee coordination of Mastery’s professional development workshops for national and regional partners
- Ensure talent recruiters and school personnel execute a variety of outreach events and that the recruitment team builds a robust database of names of talented teachers, school leaders, and network professionals
- Communicate outreach strategy, data, and goals to the Mastery Network
- Collaborate with communications team to create branded materials for teacher and leader recruitment
- Build relationships with partner organizations to expand the talent pool for teachers and leaders (e.g. own relationships with TFA Philly, Temple…)
Team Management
- Manage one team member focused on outreach
Systems Creation and Management
- Design systems and processes to ensure that the recruitment team’s efforts are maximized as Mastery grows and matures
- Oversee management of the recruitment team’s contact management system to track outreach attendance and response rates
- Oversee establishment of pathways for systematic outreach to our current contacts
- Oversee complex projects to support recruitment efforts (e.g., campus ambassador program, internal referral program) - Oversee systematic and personalized follow through after every outreach event
- Oversee compilation, analysis and reporting of outreach data to drive action and investment
External Relationship Building
- Build and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with mission-aligned organizations and individuals to attract the nation’s top talent to Mastery
- Host events for candidates from mission-aligned organizations
- Debrief with points of contacts periodically to improve ongoing relationship
Writing and Communications
- Oversee email campaigns for teacher and school leader candidates to promote upcoming opportunities and events within Mastery
- Oversee sharing of regular announcements of opportunities to like-minded organizations
- Oversee online calendar of outreach events
Qualifications:
- Ability to proceed in the absence of clear and immediate answers to problems; flexible enough to work autonomously as well as take direction as needed
- Deep expertise in the recruitment outreach function, policies, and practice
- Project management: experience managing projects that span 5-10 teams, multiple months, 10-15 stakeholder groups at both the detailed and big-picture level
- Customer service mindset: experience responding to and partnering with end users or customers to solve challenges; high degree of empathy and ability to see many sides of the same issue. While direct experience with teachers and principals is not required, the desire to serve end users well and operate with a customer service approach (responsive, active listening, closing the feedback loop) is key.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s with an advanced degree preferred and 7+ years of work experience
- At least 5 years of recruitment outreach, data and/or operations
- Experience in other talent function (e.g., development, human capital) preferred but not required
- Strong computer skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office required
- Exceptional attention to detail and organization skills required. Must be able to multi-task in fast paced environment
- Strong customer-service and communication skills (both written and verbal) required
- Ability to maintain confidentiality with sensitive information
- Ability to work well independently, as well as in a team required
- Results driven orientation
Physical Requirements:
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required such as traveling to NST office and maneuvering in office space-reaching file cabinets, filing, faxing, coping, typing, mailing, and making phone calls; Must be able to sit for up to two (2) hours looking at a computer monitor, using a keyboard and mouse and typing.
